 STUDENT BEHAVIOR HANDBOOK

 2009/2010

INTRODUCTION

This Student Behavior Handbook was written to provide you, our students, with an understanding of our school’s expectations of your behavior.

Richard Stockton Elementary School strives to provide an emotionally and physically safe environment in which students can learn and grow.  A safe environment is obtained not only through the use of written rules and consequences but is derived from a nurturing atmosphere in which all individuals are treated with respect and compassion.  Our school community consists of staff, children and parents learning together in an atmosphere in which each person feels safe, respected and challenged.

District staff and students, in conjunction with Zone PTA parents, developed a model guide as a means to strengthen our community of learners.  This model was reviewed and modified by the Stockton staff.  It describes the basic expectations for behavior in our school community as well as rules and consequences in school-wide areas.

We begin with the following rights and responsibilities.  Throughout this guide the word "Students" refers to the children, staff and parents of our school community.

ASSEMBLY PROCEDURES

Members of our community have the right to enjoy and to learn from the assemblies offered during the school year.  To do this requires listening and self control.  The children are brought into the All Purpose Room by class.  Appropriate behavior is expected of students during the entire program.

As members of this community, we have the responsibility to behave in a respectful way toward those giving the presentation by not interrupting or trying to distract others.  Should a student need to be excused or have a problem during the event, you may raise your hand quietly in order to be noticed.

Following these guidelines should allow for the enjoyment and a meaningful learning experience for all members of the community.

Dress and grooming are important factors in determining the attitudes of children towards school.  Children who come to school neat, clean and comfortably dressed help to establish a positive school climate.  We have confidence that families will continue to monitor appropriate school dress.

Inappropriate dress can be distracting and disruptive in the classroom.  Outerwear should not be worn in class, nor should children dress in scant clothing during warm weather conditions.  Children may wear shorts and comfortable tops.  Clothing with offensive language or designs is prohibited.

PTA FUNCTIONS

All community members have the right to participate in any PTA sponsored activity or event.  These functions are carefully planned and supervised to ensure that everyone in the community benefits from them.  All participants have the responsibility for their own behavior and are expected to follow the PTA Code of Conduct.

To summarize this document:

The children will:

            1.  Keep hands, feet and other objects to themselves.

            2.  Show respect for all adults and other students by their words and  actions, and listen carefully to directions.

            3.  Respect school and personal property.

            4.  Not name call, use inappropriate language, or tease others.

Whenever a student violates any of the above listed rules at PTA sponsored
functions, they become subject to disciplinary correction.

 RECESS PROCEDURES

All students have the right to a safe, enjoyable recess.  Recess should be a positive learning experience where each child can enhance physical and social skills. Perhaps the most important skill to be learned in this situation is the ability to mix enjoyment and self-control.

As responsible adult members of this community, staff members will encourage sharing, clear communication, respect of each other's abilities and physical safety.  There are games that may appear to be fun, or be fun for a short time, but inevitably lead to trouble.  To this end, there are certain behaviors which will be expected.  These are:

1. TREAT EACH OTHER WITH RESPECT.

2. Obey the instructions of the educational assistant in charge.

3. Remain in the designated play area.

4. Use playground equipment properly.

5. Line up as soon as recess is over.
